I've finished....

YAY! I have finished the Learning 2.0 program! It has been excellent. I really enjoyed it and intend on using many of the fantastic tools that I have been introduced to. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to try out some of what the web has to offer!!!!!

Second Life!

It's kinda hard to type with just my left hand since my kitty, Boo, has decided to sit on my right hand, half on the laptop and half on me!

Well, managed to get my arm free with disturbing said sleeping kitty. And much easier to type now.

So I'm nearly at the end of my Learning 2.0 Program and for my final foray into web 2.0 I need to visit Second Life.

I tried to join but my system wouldn't support the program...whatever that means...?

I like the idea of Second Life - it could become quite addictive I imagine. I have heard of people becoming so obsessed by this type of 'game' that they never leave their house - they have food delivered to their door, they spend day and night online. It could be quite destructive.

So whilst I haven't been able to play Second Life I have had a look and intend on looking further into it when I have a system that can support the program!

Facebook

Well, as I mentioned in my previous post I often use Facebook. I am astounded at how many people are on Facebook. It can inflate the ego or deflate it. It can serve as a virtual meeting place. It can be used to see what people are up to (those you lost contact with - why did you lose contact with them?) How many of your old school friends have had children, have put on weight, have lost all their hair? Who is living in another country? You can see which Disney character best suits your personality. What fruit are you? Where in the world should you live?

It is truly amazing the myriad of things Facebook allows you to do...

Myspace

I used to be an avid Myspace user, but defected to Facebook early in the piece due to the amount of people flocking to the newer social networking site.

I liked that Myspace allowed for a more creative profile, and at the time it was so exciting and new for me. But I have to admit that I rarely use it now just for the fact that more of my friends exist on Facebook. I love that social networking provides a great forum to catch up with old friends, but they can also be problematic. There has been so much in the media about cyber bullying and having been a teacher in an all boys secondary school, I saw first hand what effect these sites can have on people who experience abuse on them. I suppose with the good comes the bad. i try to look at it in a glass half full kind of way. I would never have caught up with old school friends if I didn't use these sites and sharing photos of holidays and life with people far away has been made far easier too.

RSS and newsfeeds

Well its been a while...

Decided to use Google Reader rather than Bloglines as I don't think I can remember all the passwords I have used to sign up for things!

RSS seems like a good idea although I don't think I will end up using it much. It is probably because I quite like browsing through the Internet, just as I quite like browsing through books at a book shop. I enjoy the time it takes me to find things as I often stumble upon the most amazing things. And if things a fed through to me without having the chance to stumble upon incredible new finds then I figure few or no discoveries will ever be made.

So poor Google Reader is going to be left in the cold a bit. I think iGoogle will be able to take care of any other feeds I want.

MindMeister

I really don't like the limitations of MindMeister. I found it great to begin with but just didn't allow easy enough organisation of the initial brainstorming! It has become incredibly frustrating trying to get it o do stuff. Every time I move ideas around the page it can't handle it and will only let me do about 4 moves before it stops working. Have had enough of it now.

Google Reader

While I'm kicking around waiting for a number of invites to get back to me (for flow charts etc) I thought I'd mention that I keep on seeing stuff about Google Reader...I don't know exactly what this is and I am struggling to grasp how effective a tool this could be for me just from the Google Blog info I stumbled upon...again I will keep you posted!
Or if anyone knows - let me know please!!!!
